Biography

Tobias Morris
Born and raised in San Marino California, Toby began studying cello at age 5. He has performed at various different musical venues as a soloist, a chamber musician, and as a member of numerous string ensembles. In high school, Mr. Morris began his exploration of chamber music with the creation of the S.M. String Quartet, which won first place awards in the Callie McGrath Chamber Music Competition in both 2005 and 2007. While living in Los Angeles Toby studied with a variety of teachers, but spent most of his preparatory years studying cello performance with Roger Lebow of the Los Angeles Opera, Pomona Colleges, and Chapman University.



In the summer of 2007, Toby attended the ENCORE School for Strings, studying with renowned Israeli cellist Zvi Plesser. He has worked with and studied with a variety of other cellists and pedagogues around the world including: Nathaniel Rosen, Sharon Robinson, David Krieger, Uri Vardi, Jeffrey Solow, Raphael Wallfisch, and Pablo Mahave-Veglia. Toby has been studying viola da gamba and Baroque cello with John Moran at the Peabody Conservatory since 2009. In 2012 Toby completed his Bachelor’s degree at Peabody, and in 2014 he received Master's degrees in cello performance and Pedagogy under the tutelage of Mr. Alan Stepansky. Throughout the years, both in Los Angeles and Baltimore, Toby has taught a variety of students, and sees teaching as an integral part of his passions as a musician. Toby is currently interning in Howard County and will complete his teaching certification by Fall 2014.
